Virginity regained

David Adesnik of Oxblog, blogging live from the "Daily Show":

"11:12 PM: Stephen Colbert presents 'This Week in God'. Says Catholicism turns highs school girls into either virgins or whores. OxBlog's anecdotal experience confirms this fact."

Didn't know anyone, even a Catholic school girl, could be turned into a virgin. This must just be the result of Adesnik typing quickly.

Then again, from [the Daily Show's] Jon Stewart's commencement address at William and Mary:

"In 1981 I lost my virginity, only to gain it back again on appeal in 1983."

The best combination is 'no fun at all' AND 'completely wild'.

It has something to do with virgin/whore binarisms, confession, guilt, ecstasy & bipolarity.

At least in my experience.

Dylan,
Thanks for the correct quote.

Spencer,
Sounds like you've got a healthy take on women, relationships, etc.

If I give you her email address....

...would you tell my mother that?

Does your mother have an understanding of sarcasm?

It's the only reason she survived me, I think.

A sense of irony helps, too.

Yes, irony and sarcasm. Good ways to avoid sincerity.

I mean irony in a formalist sense -- not in the camp/kitsch/I love the Brady Bunch sense.

You know, something that embodies its opposite. Negative capability. Etc. (I'm a fan of contradiction as my first post illustrates.)

My mother is a pillar of high-formalist irony. She & Bakhtin.

Catholicism is like a souped up version of single sex school. Consequently the view espoused by the corrected quote is dead on.

If I hadn't been scarred by 9 (!) years in girls' school, I probably wouldn't be blogging right now.
