Is it possible to go to the Hamptons, and see anything other than the train station, without a car? Can you just rent a bike and see what's there? Which Hampton is the most worth seeing, for a one-day trip?

Ick, Long Island is a poor man's CT. We're talking about the home of Amy Fisher afterall. I went in Southhampton once and it was horrific, wouldn't it be better to take the train to Greenwich, walk around the faux-New England-y downtown that features all the same chain stores as they have in Manhattan and a decent beach without the intense neuvo riche vibe and friends-of-Ina cliques.
But I want to go! And so does my boyfriend. Not sure why we've decided on this, maybe because it sounds like the anti-Park Slope. I just want to know if it can be done, without a car.
Oh, well yes, I have been to LI without a car, I took the ferry from CT, it does not go to the hamptons, but doubtlessly the train drops you off in a downtown-area.
Take the LIRR to Southampton, notice anti-climactically that you're on Madison Avenue, then visit the art museum: http://parrishart.org/
