Is it wrong...

...that after reading this post, I have no unsupported social commentary on home-versus-public schooling, but can only think, so that's what a PhD in French prepares you for, teaching a 9th grader Latin. And I don't even know Latin.

I overheard at my office the other day two women bragging about how many degrees their kids' nannies had. Turns out one of them was a PhD student in some liberal arts field, regarding which one of the women said, "I mean, she can make more per hour working for me than practically any other job available to someone at that level of education."

It's not uncommon for PhD students to babysit. Even if they could theoretically get a more interesting job, they're not in the market for jobs that would be the first step in another career. What worries me here is a) that the tutor already has a doctorate, and b) the person's not even tutoring in the field the doctorate is in.
