Where's a good place to go that's near NYC, accessible by train, for a three or four day vacation? Hudson Valley? Somewhere else I'm not thinking of?

The train! Think forward, Phoebe, to the day (coming very soon I hope) when you'll have your driver's license and are not burdened by the shackles of the train when choosing your vacation spot.
But, from the very few times I've looked at train prices, it was not all that much cheaper than getting a flight somewhere. That would expand the choices to warmer, happier places.
I will also accept suggestions for places easy (read: cheap) to get to by plane.
(Since I've put 'final draft of dissertation proposal' ahead of 'renew learner's permit' on my big-things to-do list, don't hold your breath.)
The hamptoms should be relatively inexpensive this time of year and easily accessible.
There seem to be a lot of inexpensive flights between NYC and Florida. Unfortunately, my mind boggles at how to get around Florida without a car.
Florida's a possibility. And Jo has threatened to rent a car. I just wouldn't be of much help, and this would be, I think, his first time driving in the US.
