Maureen Dowd bemoans the ubiquity of plastic surgery among the wealthy, especially among celebrities. And which star from the good old days does Dowd offer as an example of unique, unadulterated loveliness? Cher. Because Cher is the first person who comes to mind when you hear the phrase, "natural beauty."
Perhaps what Dowd is getting at is that plastic surgery is acceptable only when it causes the recipient to look freakish rather than attractive.
