Nick, as someone in the newspaper business, I see the becoming more and more common. While newspapers are still raking in the money, circulation is down and they're not making the money they used to. Not that that's a problem because it's still getting like 15% profits, which is incredible.
i don't doubt that it will become more common. though, latimes.com would seem to point otherwise.
I think the mistake was when newspapers created the expectation of free content to begin with. the fact is, what distinguishes a newspaper is its content, and I was surprised from the beginning that they just gave it away, free, on the web.
...the real question here is, how good are the IP people at the newspapers, because we all know that people are going to pay for access (or get it through their university) and start posting these on the web for free...
