On bangs

Are bangs a good idea? Yes? No? Maybe? So much of a haircut's appeal or lack thereof is about associations.

  1. I'm not super keen on the sheep dog look most of the time. As for other bangs I'm not sure I can generalize.

  3. Louise Brooks looked might fine with them. Sorry, haven’t anyone more contemporary that comes immediately to mind.

  4. My issue with having bangs is getting and maintaining just the right length. Sometimes too short, then getting a trim when they are in my eyes. Since I don't cut or trim my own hair, this is more of an issue than it need be, but it's too late to start now. So I have straight hair, all one lenght, parted on the side. JM

P.S. Beatiful girls can wear their hair in any style, even bad, and still be presentable. Murderous professors not so much.

  5. Pretty much never, but it's really an intensely personal thing.

  6. I suspect that bangs, like makeup, are something men claim not to like, but end up liking the results of, when seen on actual women whose appearances benefit from them.

  7. Well, I'm not sure about "men" in general, but as I said, I can't generalize about most bangs because whether they look good or not depends heavily on the person and the style. In general, though, the in-the-eyes sheep dog look just tends to look silly to me, even on an attractive person.

  8. Matt,

What I'm suggesting re: bangs is that, as with makeup, men say they like one thing, but when confronted (at a bar, party, whatever) with the other, end up liking the other more, at least on many women. So it could be that you're 100% correct about your own assessment that you think bangs are sort of eh, but your commenting this here, without any way for anyone here to know how you actually react to bangs versus non-bangs when happened upon by chance. The reason I doubt self-assessment - in general, not yours in particular! - is, again, the makeup example - no man says he likes women in gobs of makeup, and in fact most seem to make a point in preferring 'the natural look,' yet the tricky stuff, properly applied, works wonders.

  10. The straight-across-the-forehead bangs are popular in Japan right now (to get that doll-like-hair effect, example in the header here), but I haven't able to get on board. I often wonder if those bangs (and that doll haircut in general) are something that both men and women find attractive, or if it's just something that the women are all into (as a result of a few pop stars making it their signature look), regardless of what men think. My hunch is the latter, but I have no substantial proof of this except that I think that that hairstyle looks kind of ridiculous, even in glammed up magazine photoshoots.

For the past year or so, I've avoided bangs because I think they make me look a lot younger, if not childish, than I need to be looking as a TA & more generally as an 'adult.' But actually, I was just thinking the same thing, To get bangs or not? because I plan to get my hair cut soon and am aiming for something different. I might end up going the cop-out route and getting something in between.
