Long, long time ago, building contractors used to seal cats or whiskey or women inside of a building before it was finished to give the building a soul. Maybe the tenants here are going for something similar?
Certainly possible, but I'm still going with doorman-substitute, although, now that I think of it, I'm not 100% that building didn't have a flesh-and-blood doorman.
